Tim Burton Films

My dreams must be directed by Tim Burton or similar.

Does anyone else have dreams that play like a Tim Burton movie stream? No? Only me? Okay.

After a long thinking day, I declared laptop lights off at past 1am, closed my half-closed eyes and started my prayers, and drifted straight into a scary dream where someone I can’t see was tugging at my left shoulder. I pulled myself out and sank into another similar nightmare. And on it went for what felt like an hour at least, like channel surfing through cable TV that only had horror selections.

Ah the many ways that stress can haunt you (pun cornily intended).

Review: John McClane and John McClane Jr Like to Die Hard

A Good Day to Die Hard

A Good Day to Die Hard

The only thing I knew about the Die Hard films was that it was Joey and Chandler‘s favorite movie. Good thing my sparse knowledge doesn’t matter, because apparently none of the preceding four films had anything to do with the latest one.

A Good Day to Die hard is the fifth, and possibly not the last film in the franchise. That is if the fact that Bruce Willis can still hold and shoot many guns and barrel an armored Mercedes Benz truck through a vicious car chase scene at his age is indicative of anything. Also the film did well in the box office given its none-too-shy $92M budget.

The film revolves around two story lines – John McClane and his “vacation” in Germany to look for his imprisoned and estranged son John “Jack” McClane Jr played by Hollywood newbie Jai Courtney (who looked to me like a Phillip Phillips meets Shia La Beouf gone way buff), and the convoluted story of a political prisoner being harassed by a corrupt German politician. Of course, there is a “file” in question that people will shoot anyone in the head for, and of course, the American CIA is involved, the hero that will save the day. Did I hear you say “twist”? Ah, you will not be disappointed.

There are other things, however, to be disappointed about. For one, I already saw a version of that twist in Charlie’s Angels (though yes, that probably does not count as a legitimate action movie). And the John and Jack father-son drama got old and predictable pretty quickly. The actors have definite chemistry and a lot of funny moments, but I really wish Willis didn’t have to say “I am your father” too many times. He was like a clingy, gun slinging Darth Vader.

By this time, you would’ve realized I do not watch too many Rambo-type action films, because yes, often, the genre doesn’t put too much value on a well written script. But the Die Hard franchise had such a good rap and Willis is a good actor, so I was a little hopeful.

If however, you came in to the theater to see a long and violent car (truck) chase scene through heavy traffic wherein a lot of German cars get totaled, lots of heavy artillery and explosions every few frames, a sexy evil German lady in stilettos and a gun, and the two McClanes surviving bullet wounds, falls off buildings and what looked like a uranium contaminated explosion, then this is the film for you. A Good Day to Die is an action film at its very core, and it was a good adventure. I just really hope that one day, in general, the movie villains will stop gloating and exposing their megalomaniac intents before they kill the protagonists. That will make a good new twist.

Dream Boy Onew

Onew-Dream-Girl-Teaser-Photo-shinee

Plaid and floral Onew on his white horse.

A boy can not wear floral and plaid together and not be written about. It’s just not done. The outfit is plainly screaming for a blog post.

It is that happy time of year for SM Entertainment to once again whore out its ever effective noona bait. Fresh (and probably still tired) from the success of their mini album Sherlock and a multitude of concerts in Japan and elsewhere around the world, the Neverland boys of SHINee are raring and ready with another release. Leader Onew teases with the photo above for SHINee’s new song Dream Girl. Now I can with confidence say that I have the most colorful dreams, but nothing stylish like this.

The pink and blue plaid Thom Browne blazer is lollipop prep. Deliciously charming.  He drapes it over a pink and blue color block shirt with the sternest white collar, and pairs it with blue floral UNIQLO pants and studded silver sneakers. Genius, I say. Mad genius. Props to the coordi noona, and of course to Dream Boy Onew, who wholesomely pulled it off.

SHINee released the Dream Girl MV today. Enjoy the boys in their spring/summer prep below. Oh and the song is fun too 😉

Mind Setting

Do you have days when the pain you feel transcends that crunching pain on your right shoulder from lugging around your heavy bag? Days when the headache is beyond the pounding drums that are your temples? If yes, thank you for relating. The Chinese horoscope explains this cloudy feeling through the supposed fate of a Wooden Ox like me in the Year of the Water SnakeYou will face many challenges in the beginning of the year. Be patient. To you Horoscope, I stake one claim: at least in one aspect of my life, I can tell you I have earned several awards in the virtue of patience.

I say, mind setting is the new “virtue” to learn. The calendar ends earlier, in June or July. The mind set is to hold on until then.

Nick Miller Meets Space Man and Jake the Dog for the Buffet

Featuring Jake the Dog and Jigo Viray

Jake the Dog wants a lick of your ice cream, man.

When going to a buffet dinner, the first priority is comfort and ease of movement. Yes, there is a well-thought out fashion strategy for dining out in that particularly high speed, high volume environment. For that night, I turn to my new eating pants a.k.a. space pants a.k.a. SHINee pants (black stretch and faux leather panels), my red checked Nick Miller shirt, and trusty black Converse high cuts. My cousin came in with Jake the dog in his shirt pocket, and his luxurious ridiculous hair in a ponytail.

Buffet on.

Part 2. Buffet review of City Buffet SM Fairview branch

Pros – acceptable variety of dishes, from Filipino, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Western fare.   A lot of dessert offerings. Good cooking. Attendant staff.

Cons – you pay for drinks separately, but that is standard regulation for buffets. The limited offering of sashimi (no tuna?? seriously??) is unacceptable to me though. So is the limited Korean fare and lack of banchan.

Verdict – worth the time, money, and the wider waistband. I suggest though not to go there after only a recent Vikings buffet visit. Everything just pales in comparison.
