I am The Thinker. Who are you?

Enneagram The Thinker

Author’s note: I resurrected this Note from January 23 2011. I think in times like now when I feel a bit directionless, it is best to reexamine myself to get back on track. Also, because I miss school and LEADER class under Prof Mars Balgos was one of my favorites.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

We were talking about the Enneagram of Personality in class, or simply the Enneagram. As Wiki so kindly summarizes, the Enneagram originates “from the Greek words εννέα [ennea, meaning nine] and γραμμα [gramma, meaning something written)”, and “is a model of human personality which is principally used as a typology of nine interconnected personality types or enneatypes. These types are represented by the points of a geometric figure called an enneagram, which also indicates some of the connections between the types.

It sounds more complicated than it should be, but basically there is a quiz you take to determine your personality type, which then attempts to explain who you are, your strengths and weaknesses, and how you deal with the other types and life in general.

So when Prof got to discussing the Type Five – The Thinker/Observer/Investigator, it was as if he talking straight to me, like he saw right through my deadpan face as I slunk deeper into my seat to hide. His thought bubble might have read: ‘HA! I know what you are!’

And it got stressful when some of my classmates apparently do not understand a Five type person, saying ‘why would a five type choose a book over a party? Or a puzzle over a night out with friends?’ Prof (who was a Five too, but with healthier self-esteem) began to explain that it was a matter of preferences.

He goes, “A Five would sit quietly in class and not talk, just observe, not because she has nothing to say, but mostly because she prefers not to talk,” and I was gritting my teeth and in my head I was thinking, “I want to raise my hand and explain myself to them, only I don’t feel like talking.” Practically living out what the prof just said.

My confused classmate goes, “Is there something wrong with them? What do you do when you meet a Five?” And I wanted to tell her, “run to the other direction, screaming,” only the classroom is not a place for my sarcasm.

Anyway, sharing my Enneagram type, the Thinker (the name I like best). Copied the stuff I liked most.

  • Basic Fear: Being useless, helpless, or incapable
  • Basic Desire: To be capable and competent
  • Style: Controls from a distance. Often paired w/ more aggressive types. Models comprehensive analysis.
  • Conflicts: Lack of accessibility. Fives can frustrate types who need emotional reinforcement
  • Appearance: An emotional black screen. Silently watching from the edge.
  • Facial expression: Hard post look.
  • Speech: Summarizes.
  • Gift: Wise, intelligent, makes meaning out of experiences, makes the misunderstood understandable.
  • Works best in jobs where there’s time to think: R&D, libraries, night shift at the lab.
  • Problems with jobs that require open competition or confrontation: trading floor; highly interpersonal jobs: customer service, day care provider, FA.
  • Fives spend a lot of time observing and contemplating—listening to the sounds of wind or of a synthesizer, or taking notes on the activities in an anthill in their back yard. As they immerse themselves in their observations, they begin to internalize their knowledge and gain a feeling of self-confidence. They can then go out and play a piece on the synthesizer or tell people what they know about ants.
  • When they get verification of their observations and hypotheses, or see that others understand their work, it is a confirmation of their competency, and this fulfills their Basic Desire.
  • Thus, for their own security and self-esteem, Fives need to have at least one area in which they have a degree of expertise that will allow them to feel capable and connected with the world.
  • The irony is that no matter what degree of mastery they develop in their area of expertise, this cannot solve their more basic insecurities about functioning in the world.
  • They become detached, yet high-strung and intense. They typically have problems with eccentricity, nihilism, and isolation.

P.S. Prof says the quiz is not accurate, but not everybody had the pleasure of sitting in his lecture. So attaching the link here too if you would fancy to take the quiz yourself. I know you want to. http://www.enneagraminstitute.com/dis_sample_36.asp

P.P.S. Yes, this is one of those lectures in a long time that I enjoyed. Totally made up for making me do that reflection paper 😀

Review: Favorite Things from Venus and Mars

So far I have raved (and ranted a wee little bit) about Human Heart Nature and Snoe Beauty – two new and exciting local beauty brands that are making waves here and abroad as well as owning a very significant share of my wallet. The third brand in my book is Venus and Mars or simply V&M, a name that has long been a bazaar fave and cult hit to consumers looking for organic, good quality yet affordable skin care. Founded on emu oil, the “miracle oil”, V&M has since expanded to mineral cosmetics and even an organic spa. I list below my top 3 can’t-live-withouts:

Pure Full Refined Emu Oil

1. Pure Fully Refined 100% Emu oil.  It all begins and ends with this. Dubbed the miracle oil, emu oil is said to be ” the ONLY natural oil that is closest to the human skin components, thus it has the ability to cure almost any type of skin ailment, and is also the fastest penetrating oil.” This is essentially the base for most V&M products, but can also be used alone as what they call an “active.” Personally, this worked for me as the cure to stubborn dark crooks and crannies (think elbows, lip corners, sides of the nose, etc), itches and insect bites. My first test for this oil was to apply it modestly on an old childhood scar I have on my finger, earned when I so smartly tried opening a small bag of Peewee with a kitchen knife. In less than a week, the scar was noticeably fading that I had to immediately stop using the oil. For sentimental reasons, I actually want to keep that scar. Sells at P475 for a 30ml bottle and P755 for 50ml. A little bit goes a long way so even the smaller bottle lasts eternity.

Bare it All Emu Cream Minty

2. Bare It All (BIA) emu cream. This one is my absolute favorite. To call it a lotion is too primal. This multi-tasker is the answer to cracked heels, post wax/shave chicken skin on legs and underarms, and even fatigued limbs when used as a massage cream. I always get the minty version. It’s the only thing that can make me turn down the air condition during the sultry summer days. Try the 100g tub for P285 or be generous with the 300g one at P695. Since it’s all natural, you won’t ever feel like you’re slathering yourself with mineral oil and cosmetic perfume – because you aren’t – without getting any lasting moisture. I know you know what I mean, Marks and Spenser, Bath and Body and Victoria’s Secret. I’ve turn up my nose on you since I fell in love with my BIA.

V&M Lip Smooch Detox3. Smooch Lip detox. One swipe and I knew it was love. I met this lip balm wonder when I was brokenhearted from so many failed lip balms, both the organic and chemical-happy kind. The soothing mix of peppermint and emu oil hit the spot, and it was good bye, chapped lips. Itty bitty qualm: the tube melts if the temperature rises, and the container could be a LOT sturdier. Competitive with other organic brands at P205 and available in minty or regular. From my BIA preference above, you know I like my puckers smothered in peppermint too, so I enjoy the minty version.

V&M sells their skin care and organic make up line exclusively through direct dealers and bazaars, through their spanking new website, online shopping hubs Zalora and the Mall, and through their organic spa Mod Lei. Hoarding is a legitimate sport for V&M fans. You are highly encouraged to join.

Review: Favorite Things from Snoe Beauty

Snoe Beauty is another proudly Filipino cosmetic and personal care brand that is quickly winning the hearts and pockets of its growing fan base. Though not claiming to be organic or natural, the company seems hell-bent to use the best ingredients both locally and internationally sourced to concoct their exponentially growing product line. The first time I met the brand, they were all about whitening – Snoe White, they dubbed it – a beauty fad I’ve never been particularly fond of. But since then the brand has expanded from this whitening craze to a more comprehensive menu. I review a few of my picks below: Continue Reading

Review: World War Z

World_War_Z_Poster_3_24_13

World War Z zombies have a goal. Teamwork does it people!!

I had to interview my zombie-fan sister extensively before forming a more “informed” opinion of this movie. Thirty minutes in, however, in between clawing my face out in fear, I knew that it was in fact, a uniquely good zombie movie.

World War Z is an adaptation of the book of the same name, its film rights bought out by Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment production company (much to the vocal dismay of the book fans, but by now I’m pretty sure they have shut up). Pitt himself stars in the film as ex-UN investigator turned loving house husband Gerry Lane. The zombie apocalypse movie starts with how movies of this genre often do – a normal day. Gerry’s picture perfect wife and 2 girls were out and about on a family outing soon inconvenienced by heavy traffic down the streets of Philadelphia. Soon, an  explosion pushes Gerry to viciously drive onward as blind panic ensues around them. Inevitably forced out to the streets, Gerry then witnesses the cause of the pandemonium – a frenzied man bites another man. The bitten falls, squirms, contorts, screaming the entire time, and in less than 13 seconds transforms into a likeness of his attacker. Zombies attack. Continue Reading
